Update 5/17/11:
MCAWW and L32 plumbers and pipefitters are meeting regularly to negotiate a new agreement. The current agreement expires on 5/31/11. Discussions to date have been productive and both sides are working to improve the agreement and respond to market conditions. The local has scheduled a member vote for Friday, May 27.
MCAWW negotiations with L32 begin the first week in April in anticipation of the contract expiration date of May 31, 2011.
The MCAWW negotiating committee has met several times to prepare for negotiations in addition to holding employer’s only information meetings.
L32 has scheduled a member vote on the morning of May 27, 2011.
Members who have assigned bargaining rights to MCAWW will be receiving updates via email or scheduled conference calls.
Questions should be directed to Ed Kommers, Executive Director of the MCAWW, via email to ekommers@mcaww.net or 206-442-9029.
Local 32 Allocations Effective with January 1, 2011 Hours
Local 32 membership recently approved wage and fringe allocations beginning 1/1/2011. The allocations included a 20¢ increase to the Health & Welfare contribution rate which was not requested by the Health & Welfare Trust. MCAWW is considering an action or response to the Local. In the meantime, employers should make contributions as allocated by Local 32. The allocations are posted in the agreements section.
Local 26 Helpers
Employers signatory to the L26 agreement will be receiving notice from L26 regarding a change to the employer contributions for helpers. Union dues will be deducted from the current helper wage package effective with hours starting Sunday March 6th, 2011. We are working with locals to make payroll changes effective at the start of the payroll week on Sundays where possible. This is based on feedback we received at our recent payroll seminar where we heard loud and clear that payroll changes mid-week are disruptive for payroll administrators.
FASB
MCAWW recently submitted our request to FASB to consider other alternatives to their proposal to disclose certain liabilities on company financial statements.

UA NOW REQUIRING ALL FOREMEN TO BE CERTIFIED
Through June 30, 2009 existing field foremen will be recognized as a “UA Certified Foreman,” provided they can provide a letter to the UA Certification Department from their local union business manager’s office or an employing contractor that confirms extensive work experience as a foreman. Any individual certified in accordance with this provision must pass the UA Foreman Certification Examination prior to the expiration of their initial four-year certification period. The exam is 110 questions and a score of 80% or above is required to pass. Contractors will have to provide a representative at the test similar to the welding test.
Individuals who can provide documented evidence they have worked as a foreman for at least 1500 hours during the four-year certification period and have previously taken and passed the certification exam, will be recertified as a UA Foreman. Individuals working less than 1500 hours during the four-year certification period must pass the UA Foreman’s Certification Examination with a score of 80% or above.
Recertification training is provided to each individual holding UA Foreman Certification. Prior to the expiration of their four-year certification individuals must attend a minimum of three hours of update training provided by the JATC.
